Public Citizen fundamentally opposes the use of ionizing radiation as a "treatment" for food. Irradiation destroys vitamins and other nutrients, forms chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer and birth defects, and masks unhygienic food production practices. Instead of this shortsighted quick-fix, we are encouraging the food industry and government regulators to institute comprehensive solutions in response to food safety challenges.

* Plans for a new nuclear reactor in Sydney (Lucas Heights).
* The irradiation plant at Narangba in SE QLD and the nationwide use of food irradiation.

A sub-Programme of the FAO in conjunction withthe International Atomic Energy Agency caims it: assists national food and consumer protection authorities to implement Codex Standards for food irradiation and for food contaminants by using nuclear and related biotechnological analytical methods. It promotes the objective of sustainable food security by supporting countries in their efforts to improve food availability, quality and safety for domestic consumption and to satisfy requirements of the World Trade Organization’s Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary SPS) Measures relating to trade in food and agricultural commodities.
